Knight & Hale Squirrel Buster Deluxe

Knight Hale Squirrel CallThis 4-in-1 squirrel call from Knight & Hale is the best squirrel call out there. This handheld call uses an acrylic end piece and can produce 4 distant sounds, those are- extremely credible barks that work both for gray as well as fox squirrel, alarm calls, chatter and baby squirrel distress call. The company itself is a trustworthy name in relation to all things hunting and this product has proved its worth in testing, as well as on field actual usage. Hunters can also use the baby squirrel distress call to attract predators that hunt squirrels.

It weighs 3.2 ounces and its dimensions are 8.8” X 6” X 1.8”. Although it is slightly bulky when compared to other similar products, but is completely worth the effort. The product also comes with an audio cassette/C.D that explains how it works, in case you are worried that you won’t be able to figure it out on your own.

Overall I have used this piece on quite a few trips and overall I am extremely happy with it!  I think that it’s pretty durable design, and it has taken quite a few drops and it is still working great.  As for the sound, I think it sounds extremely realistic, and as for usability the learning curve is extremely small, and it is quite easy to use.  If you are looking for a reliable and easy to use squirrel call, I think this is one of the best on the market today!

Primos Hunting Squirrel Buster Call Pack

Primos Hunting Squirrel CallThis squirrel call from Primos weighs just 1.6 ounces and yet packs quite a punch in its 7.9” X 3.5” X 1.5” frame. It imitates various calls of the Gray as well as Fox Squirrels such as alarm bark, distress scream, chatter and squeal, specific to each kind. It is easy to use as well as learn, so you need not worry too much about the how’s and what’s. Everyone can use it easily and to a good success rate.

One thing I did enjoy about this squirrel call is that you could really create a variety of noises with it.  This means it can take a little practice in the beginning, but you are able to practice and test out what really works for you.  After just one or two trips out with this call I felt I had mastered it, and I was really having great success hunting.

Haydels DS-85 Squirrel Call

Haydels DS-85 Squirrel Call

While talking of products that stand true to their claim, the DS-85 from Haydels game calls, also makes itself known. The pitch of its distress call is as realistic as it gets. And at 2.1 ounces and 8” X 5” X 1”, it is a very light yet effective weapon to have in your arsenal for hunting Fox and Grays. The three sounds it produces are the distress, bark, and chatter and is the average combination that you will get from most of the squirrel whistles out in the market.

However, I personally prefer the ones with baby squirrel squeals as they serve the dual purpose of luring predators as well, but if you are keen on just squirrel hunting then this one works fine as well, and perhaps would be better without the added complications of other sounds that you can effectively do without.

  • Blowing lightly into the barrel gives off the noise of a bark, or chatter.
  • Blowing 5 panicky notes into the barrel gives off the noise of a baby in distress.

This allows you as a hunter to have a little bit of variety in your calls to help you pick out exactly what you want to call.  For this reasons, and the durability of the barrel, I think this is a great choice for a squirrel call, and there are many great reviews online of this product.

Hunter’s Specialties Squirrel Call

Hunter's Specialties Squirrel Call ReviewThis handheld call imitates the Fox, The Gray Squirrel chatter and Baby squirrel distress noises, and is really easy to use. This is a decent product that works well enough when it comes to making squirrels move. However, over the past, there have been repeated concerns over the matter of quality as it is really fragile and can break too fast. As I said, a decent buy, but if you think you are clumsy and it will be a liability then I would suggest in investing in one of the sturdier samples mentioned before.

That being said, it is an extremely simple design, it can really only produce one type of sound.  Along with that, it states that it can work in any type of weather which can be a big plus if you live somewhere where rain might be a constant threat.  That being said, if you are looking for something that is only the bare minimum, then this call will be just fie for you, but if you need something more advanced with a few variances in call types, then I suggest one of the other calls listed.

Cass Creek Harmon Scents Squirrel Call CC H SGC

The CC H SGC from Cass Creek has two noises- barks and chatter ( what we call aggressive noises). Though the calling noises are limited as opposed to some other products mentioned above, they do not lack anywhere in quality and produce quite genuine calls. It weighs just 1.6 ounces and is 4” X 6” X 9” in dimension.

Along with this, because of it’s small size it can definitely be used one handed which can be quite convenient while your out in the field.  This is definitely a simpler call out of all the ones reviewed above.  It is truly meant to be a barebones solution.  That being said although it is simple, doesn’t mean it won’t get the job done.  I have had pretty good experiences with this squirrel call, and I think it does a good job of recreating an aggressive tone from a squirrel.

Tips on Using The Best Squirrel Call for Hunting

  • Remember, none of these or any other squirrel calls would make those cute, furry rodents walk right up to you. The only functions of a squirrel call are- to make them respond to the call so that they give away their location, to get them moving out and about so that you can control the situation and calm the animals after a gunshot. In certain cases, it also stops a moving squirrel in its tracks and you can make use of the opportunity.
  • Don’t bother on being extra loud to reach squirrels far beyond your range. Be soft but precise and you will do well enough for those in close contact with you, area wise. However, under specific weather conditions, such as loud winds or rain, calling loudly would become a necessity.
  • Don’t overdo it. If the game is already active and moving no point in making any external noise that might make them change their mind. Also, if you are not successful in a particular area, better change your location than wasting time and effort on barren land.
  • Use calling after a shot. Wait a while after taking a shot and then call, as if to convey, “It is safe now. Whatever it was is gone. You can come out now”. It works in making the scared squirrels come out and investigate, and trust me these inquisitive little beasts don’t need much persuasion.
  • Experiment with various calls and pitches to better acquaint yourself with the various sounds and their meanings. With time and practice, you would be able to sound more convincing and hence better success rate.

Conclusion

Calling is not a sure shot method to succeed in hunting, as I said before, do not expect any miracles just because you are imitating their noise. However, it does give you a slight advantage over the prey and with time and practice, you will be able to make the most out of it.
